Immigration Support Letters
Navigating the immigration process can be overwhelming and emotionally taxing. As a licensed mental health professional, I offer Provider’s Letters of Support for immigration-related cases, including asylum, hardship waivers, VAWA, U-visas, and other humanitarian petitions. These evaluations are conducted with great care, clinical integrity, and cultural sensitivity.
Although I currently only speak English, I strive to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for individuals and families from all backgrounds. I am committed to providing a space where you feel heard, respected, and supported, regardless of the language you speak or the path that brought you here.
If you're seeking a mental health evaluation in support of your immigration case, please feel free to reach out with any questions or to schedule a consultation.
LGBTQIA2S+ Affirming Care
While I work with a broad range of clients, my specialized focus is on LGBTQIA2S+ mental health. I have particular experience and commitment to supporting transgender, nonbinary, and gender-expansive individuals as they navigate identity, transition-related experiences, systemic challenges, and self-acceptance.
Whether you’re exploring your gender or sexual identity, seeking support for coming out, or just wanting a therapist who understands the nuances of queer and trans life, I provide affirming, culturally competent care designed to meet you where you are.
You Don’t Have to Be Queer or Trans to Work With Me
While LGBTQIA2S+ mental health is a core focus of my practice, you do not need to be queer or trans to feel welcome here. I work with clients of all identities, and my approach is grounded in empathy, respect, and curiosity. My priority is to create a therapeutic relationship that feels safe, collaborative, and empowering, no matter who you are or what brings you to therapy.
Self-Determined Rates
In our current system, access to mental health care is often treated as a privilege rather than a right. To help challenge that inequity, I offer self-determined rates as a way to make therapy more accessible to all.
You're invited to set a rate that reflects your financial situation and access to resources. As you determine what you’re able to contribute, I encourage you to consider your social location—including your proximity to power, privilege, and economic stability. This model relies on mutual trust and collective care, allowing me to continue offering support to those with fewer financial means while sustaining my practice.
If you have any questions about how to navigate this model, I’m happy to talk through it with you.

Health Insurance
While I’m not in-network with any insurance plans, I want to be clear that making therapy accessible remains a major priority for me, especially for people who are too often overlooked or pushed out of care due to financial barriers or the communities they belong to. People with marginalized identities deserve equitable access to culturally responsive, identity-affirming, collective trauma-informed mental health care. This includes the needs of Black, Brown, Indigenous, and People of Color/Global Majority (BIPOC/PGM), as well as Queer, Trans, Nonbinary, Intersex, and ACE+ communities (QTBIPOC). I also deeply value and prioritize the voices and experiences of racialized neurodivergent and disabled communities.
To help ease some of the barriers many of us face when trying to access therapy, I have reserved a limited amount of spots in my schedule for an alternative option through Synchronicity Counseling, PLLC utilizing supervisory billing through insurance coverage with Aetna and Cigna insurance plans. If you’d like to explore whether this might be a good fit for you, please feel free to reach out to me by email or text. I’m always open to discussing possibilities and helping you find a path to care that feels supportive and accessible.
Insurance coverage can differ greatly from one plan to another. Before starting services, it is essential that you contact your insurance company to verify your specific benefits. This includes confirming whether the clinician is eligible for reimbursement under your plan, keeping in mind that they practice under supervision in accordance with licensing requirements, as well as determining your copay, deductible, and any other potential out-of-pocket expenses. Please note that it is your responsibility to understand your coverage and confirm how your plan handles services provided by an out-of-network and/or supervised clinician.
Good Faith Estimate
Under the No Surprises Act, clients have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining how much their medical care will cost. This means all healthcare providers are required to give an estimate of the bill to clients who don’t have insurance or are not using insurance.
You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency items or services. You can ask your health care provider, and any other provider you choose, for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule an item or service. If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill. Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate. For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises or call HHS at (800) 368-1019.
If cost remains a barrier to accessing care, please don’t hesitate to reach out. You’re welcome to call or text my office at (713) 396-0891 or email me at hello@riotandrefuge.com. I’m happy to talk with you and explore options that may better meet your needs.
